Warts are caused by a virus called Human Papillomavirus, or HPV for short, and are spread by contact. Clinically they are classified by location, appearance, and by the type of HPV. A wart may appear on any skin surface, and can vary in size and appearance. Common warts are frequently seen on the hands and can occur at any age. One important fact to note, sometimes warts must be distinguished from squamous cell carcinoma, particularly in the older adult, as it can be difficult to distinguish without a biopsy.
Warts can often be treated at home. The following explains when you can safely treat warts at home and when you should see a dermatologist.
